SNAP-8 Dosage, half-life & reference guide

Also known as Acetyl octapeptide-3 · Acetyl octapeptide-1 · Snap 8

A skincare peptide built as a longer version of Argireline. It copies a piece of the protein nerves use to tell muscles to contract, so the small muscles that fold expression lines pull a little less. Its evidence is the manufacturer's own tests and two small studies where it was one ingredient among several.

SNAP-8 dose guide

How it works.

An eight-amino-acid peptide, Ac-Glu-Glu-Met-Gln-Arg-Arg-Ala-Asp-NH2: Argireline's six with alanine and aspartate added. It copies residues 12–19 of SNAP-25, a protein nerve endings need to release acetylcholine onto muscle, and competes with it for a place in the SNARE complex, the machinery that releases the signal. Less signal means the small muscles that fold expression lines pull a little less. The evidence is lab assays and the manufacturer's own skin tests: no independent trial has tested SNAP-8 on its own, and in lab tests its shorter sibling Argireline barely gets past the skin's outer layer.

Commonly reported: A subtle softening of crow's feet and forehead lines after about a month of daily use, much milder than a toxin injection; irritation is uncommon.

  1. Day 1–14Clinical

The first two weeks are groundwork

Commonly reported: little to see in the first two weeks of a serum. A photo of your crow's feet and forehead in the same light today gives you an honest baseline to compare against.

    The science

The fastest published change came from inside the skin: in Shin 2024, a dissolving microneedle patch carrying SNAP-8 (0.03%) and two other actives lowered peak wrinkle height around the eye after a single use (the other eye wore a plain hyaluronic acid patch). A serum sits on the surface, and in lab tests on human skin almost none of its sibling Argireline passed the outer layer (Kraeling 2015).

  2. Day 14–28Clinical

    Expression lines start to soften

Commonly reported around weeks 2 to 4: crow's feet and forehead lines look a little softer, most when the face is at rest. It's a gentle change, nothing like a toxin's freeze.

    The science

The manufacturer's own test, published on its website rather than in a journal, reported wrinkle depth down 35% on average and up to 62% (as summarized by Errante 2020). The closest independent trial is of its shorter parent: in 60 Chinese volunteers, Argireline twice daily for 4 weeks gave a 48.9% anti-wrinkle efficacy rate on a global rating of the lines around the eyes, against 0% on placebo (Wang 2013).

  3. Day 28–56Clinical

Weeks 4–8: where the studies looked

Most of what has been measured sits around the one-month mark. Commonly reported: with steady use the softening holds, a modest change that photos in the same light show better than the mirror.

    The science

Shin 2024 (Ann Dermatol; 24 adults enrolled, 21 completed; the authors include the patch maker): a SNAP-8 patch on one eye and a plain hyaluronic acid patch on the other, nightly for 14 days and then every third night to day 28. The SNAP-8 side improved more on wrinkle measures, skin elasticity and eye lift, with no skin reactions. A vitamin C derivative and cyclic lysophosphatidic acid were in the same patch, so the result is not SNAP-8's alone.

  4. Day 56–84Clinical

Weeks 8–12: time for an honest look

This is the natural point to compare against your day-1 photo: the longest study that included SNAP-8 ended at week 12. Results vary with the formula, since how much peptide reaches the skin depends on what carries it.

    The science

Avcil 2020 (J Cosmet Dermatol; the authors include a microneedle maker): 12 weeks of hyaluronic acid microneedle patches carrying SNAP-8 with an arginine/lysine polypeptide, palmitoyl tripeptide-5, adenosine and seaweed extracts. Fine lines fell 25.8%, hydration rose 15.4% and dermal density 14.2%, with no skin reactions. On the formula: in lab tests on pig skin, water-rich emulsions delivered more Argireline into the skin than an oily one (Hoppel 2015).

  5. Any dayClinical

    What SNAP-8 is built on

A clear idea with thin proof. SNAP-8 is Argireline made two amino acids longer, built to damp the same nerve-to-muscle signal. Its evidence is lab assays, the manufacturer's own skin tests and two microneedle-patch studies where it was one ingredient of several; no independent trial has tested it alone.

    The science

The manufacturer reports that SNAP-8 at 1.5 mM cut glutamate release by 43% in a lab assay, and wrinkle depth by 35% on average in its own skin test (Errante 2020 summarizes both). The peer-reviewed human data are two multi-ingredient patch studies (Shin 2024; Avcil 2020). The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel has published no assessment of SNAP-8; it judged Argireline safe in cosmetics at up to 0.005% (Johnson 2025). How far these peptides get into the skin is the open question: in lab tests on human skin almost no Argireline passed the outer layer (Kraeling 2015), and a 2025 review calls its reach to the nerve-muscle junction uncertain (Zdrada-Nowak 2025). No trial of SNAP-8 is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov.

  6. With GHK-CuCommunity

    Why SNAP-8 pairs with GHK-Cu

Two different jobs: SNAP-8 aims at the lines expressions fold, GHK-Cu at the collagen underneath. Commonly reported: both layered in one routine, SNAP-8 on crow's feet and forehead, GHK-Cu across the face.

    The science

No study has combined the two. GHK-Cu's support is small topical trials (Badenhorst 2016, see its entry); SNAP-8's is the manufacturer's tests and two multi-ingredient patch studies (Shin 2024; Avcil 2020). Formulas that pair a signal-damping peptide with a collagen-signal one are common, as in Avcil 2020's patch, where SNAP-8 sat with palmitoyl tripeptide-5.

After week 8

  1. Day 84+Clinical

    Past the studied window

You're past where any study that included SNAP-8 looked; the longest ran 12 weeks. Many keep it in their routine once they like the results, and there's no long-term data either way.

    The science

The studies that included SNAP-8 ran 4 weeks (Shin 2024) and 12 weeks (Avcil 2020), and none followed users longer. For its sibling, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel judged Argireline safe at up to 0.005% in present cosmetic use (Johnson 2025).

Common side effects

  • Mild skin irritation (uncommon)

Interactions

No interaction studies exist. It works on the same nerve-to-muscle signal as botulinum toxin, far more weakly in lab tests of its parent peptide, and no controlled study has tested SNAP-8 alongside toxin injections. Raise prescription skin treatments, such as retinoids, with your dermatologist.

Safety notes

A cosmetic ingredient with a short safety record of its own: the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel has published no assessment of SNAP-8. It has judged its shorter sibling, Argireline (acetyl hexapeptide-8 amide), safe in cosmetics at concentrations up to 0.005%, with too little data to judge higher ones. The two published microneedle-patch studies that included SNAP-8 reported no skin reactions. In lab tests on human skin, almost none of the applied Argireline passed the outer layer, which also limits exposure. Injected SNAP-8 has never been studied in people. Discuss with your clinician or dermatologist before use near the eyes or on broken or irritated skin.
