Europe backs Foundayo, Lilly's GLP-1 pill for weight loss

A regulatory opinion, not a new study: no new results in people or animals.

The EU drug regulator's expert committee (CHMP) recommended Eli Lilly's once-daily pill orforglipron on October 16, 2026. The European Commission makes the final call, usually within about two months.

What happened

On October 16, 2026, the European Medicines Agency's human medicines committee (CHMP) endorsed Foundayo (orforglipron), Eli Lilly's once-daily GLP-1 pill, as Endpoints News and Fierce Pharma reported from the committee's October meeting.

A CHMP recommendation is the step before an EU approval. The European Commission makes the legally binding decision, normally within 67 days of the committee's opinion.

Why the crowd cares

Foundayo is a pill, not an injection: no needle and no fridge.

Unlike the semaglutide pill (Rybelsus, and the Wegovy pill), which is taken on an empty stomach with a 30-minute wait before food, Foundayo is approved in the US to be taken at any time of day, with or without food.

How it works

Orforglipron switches on the same GLP-1 receptor as semaglutide and tirzepatide, the signal that turns down appetite and slows the stomach. The difference is the molecule: it is a small molecule, not a peptide, so the gut absorbs it like an ordinary tablet.

Semaglutide is a peptide that the gut breaks down, so its pill needs an absorption helper and an empty stomach to work, which is where the fasting and the 30-minute wait come from. Orforglipron needs neither.

What it has shown

In its main obesity trial, orforglipron produced double-digit average weight loss at its highest dose over 72 weeks. In the US it is already approved for chronic weight management, alongside diet and activity.

Earlier this month its ACHIEVE-4 trial found it noninferior to insulin glargine for major heart events in people with type 2 diabetes at high cardiovascular risk. Its side effects are the familiar GLP-1 ones, mostly nausea and other stomach upsets early on, which tend to ease as the dose settles.

What's next

The European Commission's decision, then a country-by-country launch and pricing. Lilly's Q3 results on October 29 are the next place to hear about timing.
